The Degree

…isn’t just a degree.

To me, a degree means getting up in the morning and looking forward to work instead of dreading every moment before leaving the house. A degree means knowing that every single day I dip into those course books, I'm learning learning something new that's going to take me somewhere more exciting.

A degree is freedom of expression contained in notepads, scribbles and frantic assignments.

A Bit About the OU

The Open University is a distance learning university (or a correspondent university, if you’re from Yankville). It is designed to allow students who didn’t enjoy the experience of a brick and mortar “traditional” university, students who have disabilities and are unable to attend, mature returning students with no formal qualifications and even students who don’t want to do a standard degree access to a university which suits their individual learning styles.

Making the decision to attend the Open University can be a daunting one, especially if you’ve been away from formal education for a long time. But without the Open University I would never have been able to scrape together a second chance. I would be stuck counting paperclips and arranging air conditioning maintenance for the rest of my life. I – and thousands of students around the world – am beyond thankful for the opportunity this institution provides.

The Ten Year Plan

In 2013, my degree will be finished for better or for worse. Depending on the classification of my degree, I’d like ideally to go on and do a taught MA in English.

If I don’t do it, I’ll eat the monkey.
